After presenting their first new development earlier this year-the ATLAS-1110 DS (Double Stack), with two strips/stacks being processed simultaneously for the first time, Blumer have launched another new machine, the AG-4220. A fully automatic counter-pressure die-cutting machine, specially developed for processing large label formats.

With the ability to precisely process large formats measuring up to 239 x 420mm, it is able to process multiple substrate types and materials up to 50 micrometers (microns). With the AG-4220, users can look forward to maximum precision, reliability and the consistently high performance that characterise Blumer machines.

All work steps such as buffering, cutting, die cutting with counterpressure, separating and banding run fully automatically. It is suitable for medium production volumes as well as for small batches and is the only counter pressure die cutting machine in the world that can process large formats labels up to such dimensions.

Exclusively available through Friedheim in the UK, appointments are now available to test this machine in the Switzerland showroom or visit their stand E30-5 in hall at drupa in May – where Blumer will host more ‘world first’ developments.

Konica Minolta will unveil a new high-speed UV inkjet press AccurioJet 60000 and the AccurioPress C84hc in Hall 8b at drupa 2024, which are said to ‘shape the future of commercial printing, label printing, packaging, and industrial print.’

The high-speed UV inkjet press, AccurioJet 60000, is explained to be capable of producing 6000 sheets per hour along with duplex printing capabilities. The press produces high image quality and reproduction stability across a range of media, taking advantage of Konica Minolta’s inline sensors and a spectrophotometer to automatically monitor printing conditions.

Visitors to Konica Minolta at drupa will also be the first to see the AccurioPress C84hc, which uses high chroma toner. Free from the restrictions imposed by the colour gamut of ordinary toner, prints are said to be more consistent across bright and vivid colours.

The company will also introduce Myiro colour management tools for graphics arts applications. Developed by Konica Minolta’s Sensing Business Unit, these tools include spectrophotometers for colour management and high-speed auto scanning.

Konica will be joined on the stand by MGI (MGI Digital Printing Systems) showing its new JetSeal and inline die cutter, as well as launching an advanced version of its AccurioPro Colour Manager software suite.

Also joining Konica Minolta will be Industrial Inkjet (IIJ), a specialist in bespoke inkjet customisation, which exclusively uses Konica Minolta print heads in its products; and Plockmatic, a supplier of finishing options, as well as Acco and Fiery.

Konica Minolta will also be running fully automated production lines driven by artificial intelligence, and will show the use of robotics that includes the premiere of a Cobot arm.

Jon Hiscock, head of production and industrial print at Konica Minolta (UK), stated, ‘As a major player in digital production printing it is our mission to promote and support the shift from analogue to digital print. In doing so, we will build a world where high-value-added printed materials are created efficiently with minimal environmental impact.’

Packaging solutions supplier DS Smith and energy provider E.ON have unveiled a new combined heat and power (CHP) plant at DS Smith’s paper mill in Kent, the largest mill for recycled papers in the UK.

Work on the CHP plant began in 2019, with E.ON financing, building and operating the plant. The plant, which produced its first energy in 2022, has been designed to improve efficiency, sustainability and reliability – reducing CO2 emissions by 36,000 tonnes a year. It boasts an electrical capacity of 73MW, generating steam and power to help the Kemsley mill manufacture around 830,000 tonnes of recycled paper every year.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony took place on the 25 April and was attended by senior figures from DS Smith and E.ON. Both companies have been working together in the field of energy supply for several years and, with Aschaffenburg paper mill in Germany and Kemsley, are currently realising two large projects together.

In addition, E.ON IQ Energy has been deployed at the new CHP plant. This is an ‘intelligent’ energy supply solution that has been developed for energy-intensive industries. It features an automated self-controlled power plant based on patented hardware and a digital control concept that uses artificial intelligence to optimise the supply in real-time. Data from the operation of the power plant and production facilities, the grid and commodity markets are said to help make the energy supply efficient and flexible.

Niels Flierman, head of paper and recycling at DS Smith commented, ‘We’re excited about the sustainability and operational benefits this state-of-the-art plant brings to our flagship mill in Kemsley. Leading the way in reducing the impact paper making has on our environment is something we are passionate about – it’s important to us, our customers and the communities in which we operate. This is one of a number of projects we have across Europe and North America that will help us to reduce greenhouse sas emissions by 46% on an absolute basis by 2030, compared to 2019 levels, and to reach Net Zero emissions by 2050.’

Manfred Wirsing, managing director of E.ON Energy Projects, said, ‘We are delighted the new site for our partner DS Smith in Kemsley has come on-line. This successful project is another example of how we are driving decarbonisation for our industrial customers and their production processes across Europe. The new energy solution we have implemented on site will make DS Smith more independent and flexible and, with a high degree of automation, optimally positioned for the future.’

Dr Martin Sonnenschein, chairman of the supervisory board of Heidelberg, said, ‘Over the past three years, Marcus Wassenberg has done effective work both in restructuring the company and in driving forward the transformation. Manufacturer of digital inkjet printing equipment Inkcups has announced the launch of the ‘lustre effect’ for its Helix line of printers, a technique that creates a metallic appearance on aluminium, stainless steel and other metal cylindrical vessels.

Implemented in software, the lustre effect is achievable on all Inkcups’ digital cylinder printing machines, similar to mirror print, tone-on-tone, and contour print. The new technique allows unlimited embellishment features to create gradations, dimensions, hidden and subtle watermarks and patterns with the metallic colours. The specialised software eliminates time consuming manual steps, to save time and money.

Ben Adner, CEO of Inkcups, said, ‘This new technique will enhance offerings by enabling customers to print metallic colours and embellishments on products like aluminium cans, stainless tumblers, and more.’

The company currently has warehouse locations in the USA, Canada, Mexico, Germany and Hong Kong.
