Konica Minolta will unveil a new high-speed UV inkjet press AccurioJet 60000 and the AccurioPress C84hc in Hall 8b at drupa 2024, which are said to ‘shape the future of commercial printing, label printing, packaging, and industrial print.’

The high-speed UV inkjet press, AccurioJet 60000, is explained to be capable of producing 6000 sheets per hour along with duplex printing capabilities. The press produces high image quality and reproduction stability across a range of media, taking advantage of Konica Minolta’s inline sensors and a spectrophotometer to automatically monitor printing conditions.

Visitors to Konica Minolta at drupa will also be the first to see the AccurioPress C84hc, which uses high chroma toner. Free from the restrictions imposed by the colour gamut of ordinary toner, prints are said to be more consistent across bright and vivid colours.

The company will also introduce Myiro colour management tools for graphics arts applications. Developed by Konica Minolta’s Sensing Business Unit, these tools include spectrophotometers for colour management and high-speed auto scanning.

Konica will be joined on the stand by MGI (MGI Digital Printing Systems) showing its new JetSeal and inline die cutter, as well as launching an advanced version of its AccurioPro Colour Manager software suite.

Also joining Konica Minolta will be Industrial Inkjet (IIJ), a specialist in bespoke inkjet customisation, which exclusively uses Konica Minolta print heads in its products; and Plockmatic, a supplier of finishing options, as well as Acco and Fiery.

Konica Minolta will also be running fully automated production lines driven by artificial intelligence, and will show the use of robotics that includes the premiere of a Cobot arm.

Jon Hiscock, head of production and industrial print at Konica Minolta (UK), stated, ‘As a major player in digital production printing it is our mission to promote and support the shift from analogue to digital print. In doing so, we will build a world where high-value-added printed materials are created efficiently with minimal environmental impact.’

Fiery and Vivid Laminating Technologies have announced a partnership to integrate Fiery’s DFEs and workflow management software with Vivid’s cutting and other finishing offerings in order to provide automated workflows from prepress to finishing.

The combination of Fiery workflow software and Vivid’s VeloBlade cutting systems and VeloTaper flatbed taping systems provides print operators with an integrated end-to-end solution for print job preparation and finishing set-up. Fiery JobFlow automates the submission and job preparation processes, generating print-ready files that include finishing instructions, registration marks and QR codes to streamline the finishing process and reduce the need for rework.

Fiery JobFlow can be used to improve image resolution for wide format print, while Fiery Impose automates tasks such as ganged layouts and booklet-making with customisable imposition templates. For print-to-cut jobs, Fiery Digital Factory provides true shape nesting and helps reduce material usage.

The integration extends to Vivid’s ZipCore Packaging Suite, CAD/CAM packaging software that optimises packaging design. Fiery JobFlow performs job processing tasks in the ZipCore file instructions, including handling CMYK data and the cut line file information. The combined solution helps businesses speed up and automate the everyday jobs of packaging designers, graphic designers and salespeople involved in creating and producing packaging, allowing jobs to be produced faster.

‘This partnership reflects our commitment to saving businesses time and resources from start to finish,’ said Lewis Evans, commercial director, Vivid. ‘The efficient solution allows businesses to improve job turnaround time and increase their daily workload.’

‘We are excited to work with Vivid to develop this new industry-leading workflow,’ commented Terry Garvey, partner alliance director, Fiery. ‘The solution will deliver significant savings, reducing job preparation time to a few minutes and reducing media consumption by an average of 33% compared with traditional methods. This helps increase the profit per job with printers seeing a return on investment for Fiery JobFlow in a matter of months.’

Sharp has launched two new Pro Series MFPs (multi-function printers), equipped with Fiery controllers and aimed at enabling entry level-light production printing at a reduced cost while offering improved quality and substrate flexibility.

The two new lines are the BP-90C70 and BP-90C80, which respectively offer up to 70 and 80ppm in colour or mono (the 90C70 runs at 75ppm in mono) on materials up to 220gsm. Heavier materials up to 360gsm are also supported, but not at these speeds. Production of full-bleed printed booklets and brochures is possible with optional trimming, stapling and hole-punching, page insertion and different folds. A range of paper types is also supported, including coated, uncoated and textured stock, from input through to finishing, with a maximum input capacity of 13,500 sheets.

Sharp has integrated Fiery Print Servers featuring the Fiery FS600 Pro platform, which can either be embedded into the BP-90C80 and BP-90C70 or installed externally. The Fiery technology offers Sharp users local and remote Mac and PC clients to edit, submit and preview jobs before printing without sacrificing speed. This includes advanced colour management to maintain colour consistency through profiling and troubleshooting for maximum accuracy.

Both models feature Sharp’s largest 15.4in integrated colour touchscreen. An updated status screen allows for advanced job queue visibility, while the embedded Fiery controller simplifies job programming with ‘easy-to-master’ colour tools, including Fiery JobExpert automation, which analyses each job and sets the appropriate print and colour settings to achieve the highest quality while optimising processing time.

The printers can be integrated into Microsoft Teams or Gmail through a native connector, meaning employees can easily print from and scan documents to their email, Teams channels and folders.

Ben Lake, senior product manager at Sharp Europe, said, ‘At Sharp, we look to provide solutions across a range of printing needs, and our latest additions to the series provide an opportunity for organisations to enter the world of entry-level light production printing, reducing costs and improving turnarounds. We’re proud to be among the first to bring the Fiery Server to the market, augmenting Sharp’s consistent quality with increased processing power.’

John Henze, VP of sales and marketing for Fiery, commented, ‘These Fiery DFEs help in-plants and print providers automate job management and accurately process jobs with less experienced staff while operating at peak performance and delivering the highest quality the first time and every time.’

Fiery has developed the FS600 Pro, a new DFE claimed to provide ‘unrivalled performance, superior colour and intelligent automation’ for digital printing in a wide range of press types and applications, aiming to simplify and automate job preparation and processing while ensuring print production runs smoothly and at maximum capacity.

The FS600 Pro offers a number of features enabling its use in fluctuating deamnd digital printing environments, with the HyperRip capability automatically switching between single-job and multiple-job modes based on a file’s characteristics , either splitting a single job into multiple parts or processing multiple short jobs simultaneously.

User-friendly colour management automation is claimed to ensure ‘superior’ colour accuracy and quality while cutting operator and profiling time by up to 50%; one-step colour management means users can calibrate and profile media directly from the Fiery Command WorkStation; for presses with inline instruments, scheduled recalibrations help maintain colour without operator intervention. Fiery Edge spot colour processing is said to produce up to a 20% dE improvement in spot colour accuracy, especially for colours near or outside a printer’s gamut.

Jobs can then be submitted to Fiery JobFlow directly from the Fiery Command WorkStation. Operators can group multiple jobs and apply properties to speed up job preparation time. Fiery JobExpert analyses incoming PDFs to identify repeating records in jobs for VDP preparation to maintain record integrity. The result is a one-click workflow for most job types, resulting in ‘significant’ time savings and ensures jobs are printed with the correct settings. The FS600 Pro DFEs use Adobe PDF Print Engine 6.0, providing users with a native end-to-end PDF workflow.

New is Print Scheduler, which allows operators to slot jobs into a dynamic 24-hour window to best align with equipment availability and customer deadlines. Fiery FS600 Pro also includes several security and compliance enhancements designed to meet corporate and industry regulations for data security, encryption and sanitisation standards. This includes integration with organisational single sign-on (SSO) credentials and full compliance with FIPS 140-2 and Common Criteria.

John Henze, vice president of sales and marketing at Fiery, explained, ‘As print providers face rising operational costs, labour storages and decreased margins, they need intelligent automation tools designed to increase both employee and print system efficiency. The Fiery FS600 Pro platform does just that by automating pre-press, make-ready, and colour management into one-step workflows, making it easier for less experienced operators to print the highest-quality product the first time. With Fiery doing the heavy lifting, print business owners have the tools and analytics to maximise production throughput, save time, and reduce errors, resulting in increased profitability.’

DFEs based on the Fiery FS600 Pro platform will be available with forthcoming digital printers and presses from a range of OEMs.

EFI’s long-standing digital front-end (DFE) operation Fiery has been split from the company and will now operate as Fiery, while remaining under the ownership of private equity affiliate Siris Capital Group, which acquired EFI in 2019. Following the separation of EFI’s productivity software arm to form eProductivity Software at the end of 2021, this leaves EFI with its range of wide-format printers, including the Vutek high performance and Reggiani textile lines, plus the Nozomi corrugated and Cretaprint ceramic printers and other industrial inkjet machines.

Toby Weiss, chief operating officer and general manager of Fiery, will continue to lead the business as CEO of Fiery, with Jeff Jacobson serving as executive chairman of Fiery in addition to his role as executive chairman of EFI. Frank Pennisi, a veteran of the industrial and technology sectors has been appointed chief executive officer of EFI.

‘This realignment positions both EFI, now solely focused on digital inkjet for industrial applications, and Fiery, the leading global DFE provider, to win in their independent markets while maintaining the close partnership that has contributed to the success of each business,’ said Mr. Jacobson. ‘I have always believed that digital imaging would not be where it is today without Fiery, and its separation from EFI will allow it to best serve customers in the DFE market.’

‘Fiery solutions have always been about enabling digital print and making print engines better, and this is a milestone in furthering that mission,’ said Mr Weiss. ‘Fiery OEM partners will benefit knowing that they are working with a company that is completely focused on adding value to their print platforms with world-class coloir management, high-performance image processing, and automated workflows.

‘Fiery will remain focused on working closely with its OEM partners, including the EFI Inkjet business, to continue developing cutting-edge technology that drives the next generation of automation, accuracy and profit potential in digital printing,’ Mr Weiss continued. ‘Fiery now has a greater ability to serve as a neutral partner to ensure OEMs capture success within digital print. We look forward to accelerating our investment as a standalone company, while driving our expanding product portfolio.’

Mr Pennisi comes to EFI from Orora Packaging Solutions, a provider of custom packaging solutions with a focus on corrugated, where he was president and CEO, as well as being a user of EFI’s Nozomi single-pass inkjet press. His experience with EFI solutions includes collaboration and consulting with Orora Packaging’s sister company, Orora Visual, a display graphics provider that is among the largest North American users of Vutek display graphics and EFI Reggiani industrial textile digital printers.

‘As a former customer, I know that EFI’s digital industrial inkjet portfolio is unmatched in the industry,’ said Mr Pennisi. ‘The company’s suite of equipment, inks and intelligent service positions it to address its customers’ most critical needs. I am thrilled to be joining EFI at this pivotal moment as the industry transitions toward digital inkjet.’
