Durst Group, manufacturer of digital printing and production technologies, has expanded its portfolio with the P5 350 HS Pack, an automated option for digital corrugated and display printing.

The P5 Pack series is a printing option tailored to the production of corrugated displays and packaging. The P5 350 HS Pack combines the versatility of a P5 hybrid printing system with the ability to print on a wide range of materials used in the POP/POS and retail markets.

Andrea Riccardi, head of product management, graphics at Durst, commented, ‘The modular design of the P5 technology platform enables us to develop new products for a wide range of applications. We identify market requirements and incorporate them into our development process. The P5 350 HS Pack is another result of our customer-oriented approach and expands our P5 portfolio.’

As part of the P5 Pack series, Durst is introducing a new ink set that is tailored to the requirements of display and packaging printing. The Luvera LED ink is characterised by low odour and high abrasion resistance. With this new ink, Durst has covered a wider colour gamut to give displays and packaging a high level of vibrancy. The Luvera inks are also Ikea and IOT-Mat compliant.

The P5 Pack series is equipped with a material guide and a pressure rollers system, aiming to ease production. The series’ automated corrugated edge holders avoid collisions between the print heads and the substrates. The width and height are set automatically by selecting the media channel in the software, reducing set-up time.

In addition, the vacuum system increases the suction power on the print belt by approximately 40% compared to the conventional systems. This means that heavy and warped corrugated boards can be flattened and printed cleanly.

The P5 Pack series also includes the sensor-controlled Multitrack six function, which is managed by six independent printing queues, enabling up to six corrugated boards to be printed in parallel by manual feeding.

To maximise production potential of the printing system, the P5 Pack series, as all P5 printing systems, can be equipped with the proprietary Durst Workflow Rip/colour management and analytics software such as the Durst Automat MT.

With this new option for the automatic feeding and stacking of boards, up to four lanes can be processed in parallel. The multi-lane operation of the Automat MT works together with the Multitrack six function of the P5 350 HS Pack and is said to result in clean and fast media separation, even with difficult synthetic boards and thin substrates.

Continuous and stable production is ensured by pneumatically controlled flaps that prevent the materials from slipping during the loading and unloading process. The entire printing process is continuously monitored by surveillance cameras. The feed and delivery tables have also been further developed to ensure smooth transportation of the boards.

‘With the Automat MT, we can map different levels of automation, ranging from three quarters to full automation. This allows us to raise our customers’ productivity to a new level,’ stated Christian Harder, vice president of sales at Durst Group.

The availability of the P5 Pack series is planned for Q3 2024.

Albert Basse Associates (ABA) of Stoughton in the US state of Massachusetts, has invested in a Durst P5 350 HS as the nonagenarian business seeks to cement its legacy and grow further in the run-up to its centenary.

Founded in 1928, ABA is one of the longest continually operating, family-owned, large format digital and screen printers in the US. The company produces a wide range of products covering every category of standard and custom graphic display, signage and industrial applications, including point of sale, decals, banners, signs and posters, door and window clings, floor graphics, etc.

ABA utilises both digital and screen printing technologies. In terms of digital, equipment from swissQprint, Seiko, Epson and Xerox sit on its factory floor. To continue growing and meet the changing needs of customers, Albert ‘Chip’ Basse III, president of ABA and his team knew exactly what they needed, stating, ‘Our goal was to improve our digital quality, increase overall capacity, increase our size capabilities and improve output speeds.’

These requirements led ABA to the Durst P5 350 HS.  This high-performance press is an all-in-one hybrid option for roll and board media, with a printing width of up to 3.5m and output of up to 650sqm/h. ABA is also using Durst Workflow software for pre-press automation and is implementing the Durst Lift ERP.

Larry D’Amico, director of sales, labels, flexible packaging and fabric at Durst US, commented, ‘It’s important to look at a business today and see what it will be in the next years and decades to come. We are pleased ABA has chosen Durst as a partner for its future. Durst technology will continue their long legacy of quality and customer satisfaction, while enabling them to grow into different markets.’

Mr Basse continued, ‘The press has been a real game changer and has opened up markets and volume that we could not have achieved otherwise. Due to size and speed constraints in the past, we had to pass up many opportunities with existing and new accounts. With the P5, we are now able to offer our clients improved quality and larger size output, and also improved lead times and turnaround. Ease of use, quick setups, incredible quality and performance.

‘As our needs grow, we expect to rely on Durst to help us grow with new equipment and software solutions.’

Large format commercial printer MacroArt has made a mural for the Oxfordshire country house Blenheim Palace, featuring a 280sqm installation – the largest building wrap completed during their partnership.

Working alongside Creative Gravy, the 12m-high building wrap is covering essential repairs being made to the Flagstaff gate. It features an amalgamation of art created by 30 budding artists from across Oxford, aged between eight and 25 years old. The high-impact design was printed on high tensile PVC mesh on MacroArt’s Durst 512R, then was stitched together to create the mural ready for installation.

The design was created as part of Blenheim’s partnership with local charity Oxfordshire Youth. Visual artist Kate Turnbull was commissioned to lead interactive creative sessions at the palace and assist the young individuals in bringing their vision of this Unesco world heritage site to life. The finished mural combines drawings, digital imagery and text such as poetry.

MacroArt’s group account director, Mike Hamling, said, ‘This is a new high for our partnership with Blenheim Palace. Not only is it our biggest installation to date with them, but it is also fantastic to support such a great cause that is Oxfordshire Youth. Witnessing young artists take inspiration from seeing their designs now in situ.

‘Our team worked so hard to bring this to life and I think we’ve created something that we can all be very proud of.’

Samantha Vaughan, head of marketing at Blenheim Palace, commented, ‘What a wonderful project this was! We are extremely delighted with the outcome; our entrance is definitely a showstopper, and we couldn’t have done this without the team at MacroArt helping to create this bold and vibrant artwork.’

Durst Group has expanded its P5 wide-format portfolio with a raft of enhancements to automation, flexibility, speed, software, services and sustainability, announced at Fespa.

Durst’s P5 350 HS hybrid printer is joined by an ‘ultra-fast’ counterpart for roll-to-roll applications, the P5 350 HSR. The P5 HSR is a 3.5m LED roll-to-roll printer capable of  speeds of up to 670sqm/hr and can be equipped with an optional master roll. This can feed rolls weighing up to 1000kg and 635mm in diameter, enabling long production cycles without interruption.

The printing system can be equipped as with double CMYK. For printing mesh and perforated material, the 350 HSR offers ink dust-free processing with the integrated mesh printing system. It also enables fast material changeover, which can be carried out by a single operator. Efficiency can be further increased via optional vertical and horizontal cutting units, which operate inline with the printing process.

Durst has also  invested further in software development in recent years, and currently uses its Analytics software to monitor more than 900 printers in production at customers’ sites in order to ensure the continuous availability via preventive maintenance measures. Over 600 sites also use Durst Workflow for their prepress and print preparation steps, and 150 Smart Shops are in use at web-to-print providers to enable seamless connection from the web store to production. In Europe, 45 Lift ERP solutions have now also been installed, bringing together business processes such as warehouse management, logistics and accounting with print production.

Durst also used Fespa to demonstrate its P5 Robotics option for maximum speed unattended overnight printing, which complements the auto-stacking system that was previously available. A new addition to the Vanguard line, the 3.2 x 2m flatbed VK3220T-HS flatbed, was given its world premiere.

Big Value Banners has invested in an EFI Vutek Pro 30h printer from CMYUK. The hybrid UV LED printer replaces a Durst Rho P10-160 flatbed, offering the business greater versatility to push forward with an increasing amounts of SEG (silicone-edged graphics) work, whilst responding to demand for rigid graphics.

An online services company, bigvaluebanners.co.uk was founded by Dave Quinn in 2008. Initially, the printing was outsourced and Mr Quinn managed sales. However, the need for more control and a faster turnaround lead him to bring nearly all printing in-house.

Over the past 15 years, a strategy of steady in-house investment has supported the business’ expansion into new service offerings, which now include banners in any size and material, wallcoverings, floor graphics, pavement signage, vehicle graphics, magnetic signs, contour cut self-adhesive, feather flags and flag poles.

‘The business has literally snowballed. We started out with Roland printers then invested in 3.2m UV LED Mimaki equipment also purchased from CMYUK, and now we’ve swapped out our Durst for the Vutek. We’re now also looking at adding dye sublimation technology to our plant list, which completes the last piece of our in-house production puzzle,’ commented Amy Quinn, who runs the administrative side of the business.

‘With our old flatbed, we were dealing with an engineer that had to come from France which wasn’t ideal. We really wanted local support, and we’d had a really good experience with CMYUK after buying our second Mimaki UJV55-320 from the company about two years ago,’ continued Ms Quinn. ‘The Vutek expands our in-house service offerings and enhances our throughput speeds and reliability. We can’t predict from one month to the next what type of work we’ll be producing as every day is different, but we are sure that the EFI Vutek Pro 30h will underpin the next stage of our business evolution, taking us towards onward future growth.’

Durst has installed a solar panel plant at its headquarters in Brixen, South Tyrol, Italy.

The initiative is part of the company’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint. The solar panel plant has a capacity of 1,569KWp and is expected to generate over 1.7 million KWh of energy annually. This corresponds to approximately more than half of the energy demand of Durst’s Brixen headquarters. The installation consists of 3410 modules, two separate plants and 14 inverters.

The plant will produce 70% of the generated energy for direct self-consumption, while the remaining 30% will be available for feed-in or future storage. The technology used includes power optimisers by Solaredge, and the company claims that these ‘maintain the performance of a series of modules even in the presence of partial shading or pollution.’

‘Following our installation of a solar panel plant at our production site in Lienz/Austria in 2022, we are thrilled to have installed now one of the biggest solar panel plants in South Tyrol at our headquarters in Brixen,’ commented Christoph Gamper, CEO of Durst Group. ‘Our commitment to sustainability is a core value at Durst, and this new installation is a testament to that commitment. We are proud to take this important step towards reducing our carbon footprint and making a positive impact on the environment.’

Bradford-based printer Dominion Print has enhanced its manufacturing facilities with a £500,000 investment in additional printing and production equipment, having commissioned an EFI Vutek Q5r super-wide roll-to-roll printer along with a fully automatic rolling machine, and its second Zünd G3 XL cutting table.

Dominion claims to be one of a ‘select’ number of printers with the ability to provide super-large options and applications. The latest investment follows a recent £1 million investment in a Durst Rho 2500 flatbed printer, along with an additional in-line welding and eyeleting machine and further in-line, fully automatic sewing machines.

Verity Fox, director at Dominion Print, said, ‘Back in 1997 my father, Dominic Clark, invested in the Vutek UltraVu 5300 which, at the time, was state-of-the-art wide-format digital technology. Twenty-six years later, we’ve come full circle. Dad taught me from being knee high that in print you need to invest to stay ahead of the competition. We shared many double espressos discussing the various machine options and viewing samples prior to deciding on the Vutek Q5r and signing on the dotted line! With the extraordinary speed and quality, it seemed the right fit to be going back to Vutek after all this time. The installation and commissioning of the machine was bittersweet, as Dad passed away earlier this year and never got to see the machine in situ. Nevertheless, I’m excited to be adding the Vutek Q5r to our plant list and I intend to carry on his legacy of success through investment.

‘The Vutek Q5r takes Dominion’s strength in large and super-large formats to the next level, raising the bar even further for our ability to provide high-end printing at lightning speeds. The machine provides UltraDrop Technology for high-definition image quality, outstanding smoothness in shadows, gradients, and transitions, as well as superb text quality and more clarity in all print modes.’

Ms Fox continued, ‘Just prior to the Vutek’s arrival we also invested in a second Zünd G3 XL to ensure that our cutting and finishing capabilities were in step with our increased printing capacity. With its modular tool concept, no other cutting or routing machine is as flexible or adaptable. The machine will operate alongside our original Zünd G3 XL and our other finishing equipment which includes a precision cutter for aluminium profiles and a Blackman & White blade and laser CAD system which gives us the largest single bed cutting facility in Europe.’
