Mimaki has unveiled a significantly faster version of its ‘Kebab’ cylindrical object printing option for its UJF series of flatbed UV printers, the Kebab HS.

Mimaki reports that over 1600 Kebab units are already installed in the EMEA region with an average of one out of five UJF-series printer users choosing to add this option. UJF flatbed printers equipped with a Kebab option can achieve three-dimensional direct-to-object printing, increasing the variety of print applications possible with their printers.

Building on the capabilities of the Kebab MkII, the new Kebab HS increases productivity by three times, taking approximately 10 minutes to print per material, suitable for users handling mid-volume orders with a single printer. It also broadens application possibilities in UV printing further, by allowing personalisation on both cylindrical and tapered items with sloping sides, subject to a maximum angular taper of 7.5 degrees.

Arjen Evertse, general manager sales at Mimaki Europe, commented, ‘Here at Mimaki, we look to constantly innovate our existing products and create added opportunities for print service providers, and the launch of the Kebab HS is one of the latest examples of this. As an optional solution, it allows the users of our popular UJF Series printers to add another dimension to their product offering and up their competitive edge.’

This new Kebab option can be quickly installed, requiring only the attachment of the main unit to the UJF Series print table; certified service engineers are available Mimaki UK and Ireland exclusive distributor Hybrid Services to provide a ‘seamless’ installation. The current Kebab MkII and Kebab MkII L will remain available and are recommended for printing on smaller diameters (50mm or less) and items longer than 280mm.

This year will see Sign & Digital UK (SDUK) celebrate its 35th edition, and the organisers say they are particularly pleased to report that many new businesses from across the UK and beyond will be exhibiting at the show, representing diverse sectors within the signage and digital printing industry. In addition to the fresh faces, SDUK will see the return of some big-name exhibitors, adding further expertise and innovation to the exhibition floor. According to new show owner Datateam, this combination of new and established participants ‘ensures a comprehensive and compelling experience for all attendees’.

Speaking about the co-location of SDUK with Printwear & Promotion Live (see preview on p40), event director Tony Gardner said, ‘Sign & Digital UK 2024 is the first SDUK under our ownership, and we are really looking forward to seeing how the co-located event works. All shows must continue to develop their offering and we believe a co-located event is key to help grow the show, and to attract a new audience into the world of sign-making and large-format digital printing. Visitors will have the chance to explore the latest technology and innovations first-hand, with many of these advancements being showcased in the UK for the first time.’

The exhibition will be complemented by the International Sign Association (ISA-UK) Explains Lounge. Now in its third year, the Lounge will host a series of presentations and panel discussions designed to inform and educate visitors to the show on the latest developments, trends and innovations and how they will impact the large format printing, sign-making and visual communications industry.

Topics include managing your sign business, business advice sessions, daily panel and feature sessions. The Women in Sign and Graphics session focuses on their contributions to the industry, while The Printing Charity will share ways to support mental well-being within the sector.

On the show floor, Hybrid Services, the exclusive UK and Ireland distributor for Mimaki Europe, is introducing three new printers at the event. These are the Mimaki TxF300-75 direct-to-film printer launched in August 2023, the UJV100-160Plus LED UV printer announced in September 2023, which will have its first UK exhibition showing, plus the first showing of the Mimaki UCJV330-160 LED UV integrated printer/cutter. The latter is a 1.6m production machine that Hybrid says offers ‘highly creative capabilities coupled with ultra-low running costs’.

RGB and Oki Europe are teaming up to support motor vehicle number plate printing with a complete ‘business in a box’ solution. They will be featuring the A3+ Oki Pro9542 printer, which includes white toner, and the Oki C650, described as ‘the world’s smallest high performance colour printer’  but still suitable for commercial print.

UK Feather Flags will showcase various products, including a new line of Eco fabric exhibition display solutions that it says demonstrate its commitment to sustainable signage. The company aims to build brand awareness, forge new business relationships, and gain insights into emerging market trends.

Sign Trade Supplies plans to display its range of sustainable aluminium profiles, sign fixings, and components, emphasising value to customers. The stand will also feature an interactive element, adding a ‘fun and engaging dimension for attendees’.

Assured Signage aims to use the show to highlight the potential of digital signage as a new revenue stream for traditional sign-makers and printers. It will present its media player, Sureview Genesis, which is claimed to offer offering exceptional performance and a low cost of ownership. The stand will also feature displays from Papercast, showcasing e-ink displays ideal for outdoor applications.

Roland DG  is taking space at both SDUK and Printwear & Promotion. At the former, it will showcase its new VersaObject MO-240, which replaces the company’s popular LEF2 Series and is designed to enhance direct-to-object printing with new levels of productivity. For those interested in signage, interior design and vehicle wraps, the company will also be showcasing its TrueVIS AP-640 resin printer, plus the popular TrueVis LG-640 UV print and cut device, and the 2.4 x 1.2m VersaObject EU-1000MF flatbed that can handle objects up to 95mm thick. These will be backed by demonstrations of the DG Connect software app.

Brownings, in partnership with Magnwall, plans to showcase novel wireless electrification systems at SDUK 2024. This allows users to mount electrical accessories onto the face of tension fabric systems, eliminating the need for complex wiring. The stand will also feature Brownings’ range, including TexSign tension fabric systems, Flex face products and bespoke snap frames.

BestSub will showcase its latest engraving machine, craft heat presses, Otter DtF system, and a comprehensive selection of craft supplies, materials, and tools.

InkTec had been planning to show a brand new printer, the Jetrix LXa5 flatbed, but the conflict around the Suez Canal has delayed it, so the firm will focus on sustainability, showing how Jetrix printers can be upgraded to move with the times and continue to deliver on their initial investment. The Jetrix LXi8 UV flatbed will be present, sporting a new user interface that improves the nesting and mapping capabilities of the printer to minimise media wastage. There will also be the first showing of the Jetrix XGR320 3.2m UV LED roll printer. Both machines will be printing with GreenGuard Gold accredited inks.

QPS will feature four LED UV printers from ColorJet on its stand – the 49sqm/hr Verve 2513M flatbed, the Verve Mini 1050 x 1650mm compact flatbed, the 2m width Vulcan Hybrid X and the 3.2m Vulcan 3201M which offers at top speed of 76sqm/hr. Collectively these cover a full gamut of wide-format applications from small signage and promotional items to high volume roll substrates, plus rigid materials including ACP, foam, board, flute board, glass, ceramic tiles and wood. QPS will also feature the Nazdar range of inks.

Drytac won’t have a stand of its own, but its products will feature on Epson, Hybrid Services and Roland’s stands, as well as that of exclusive distribution partner Premier Paper Group. While Premier will display a selection of Drytac materials and can advise about the full range, Epson will feature SpotOn Floor 200 and ReTac Textures Sand wallcovering films, while Hybrid will be printing Polar Chrome reflective PET, Polar Choice White film and Visiprint films. Roland’s stand will show ReTac ChalkMate, which yields a blackboard-type finish.

Another first will be the debut of the SC-V1000 A4 flatbed printer from Epson. This is an entry-level flatbed printer aimed at small businesses in the promotional goods industry. Described as highly compact and affordable, V1000 can print directly on a wide range of substrates with a thickness of up to 70mm, including acrylics, polycarbonates, PVC, aluminium, metal, polyester, foamboard, styrene, wood and stone, making it suitable for creating promotional and personalised items.

Mimaki has announced two new 1.6m UV LED printers in its 100 and 300 series, the UJV100-160 Plus and the UVJV330-160 printer/cutter, respectively offering clear and white inks and increased productivity, and reduced power and ink consumption.

Available in the UK and Ireland through exclusive distributor Hybrid Services, the new UCJV330-160 integrated printer/cutter is said to offer versatile LED UV roll-to-roll inkjet printing with significantly improved productivity and image quality. It has a production speed of 28sqm/hr in four-colour configuration, dropping to 18sqm/hr with white and/or clear inks. These speeds can be achieved with high output quality, thanks to Mimaki’s newly-developed ink firing technology that improves colour reproduction in high density areas even in high-speed output mode.

The printer is equipped with white and clear inks as standard, and users can print high quality images on conventional media used for outdoor sign graphics applications, as well as translucent, transparent, and coloured materials, including PET, polyurethane and other resin films, textiles and uncoated paper. This media flexibility is complemented by the ability to produce 2.5D print, watermarks or five-layer printing, and the UCJV330-160 is also equipped with advanced features for contour cutting to deliver stickers, decals and labels.

The UJV100-160Plus model is described as ‘affordable’ and has been designed to consume an ‘exceptionally low’ amount of power. At 0.5kW, MImaki estimates it consumes less than half the power of alternative eco-solvent and latex/resin printers on the market, helping to reduce running costs and CO2 emissions. A new ink saving function reduces consumption by up to 50% while maintaining the colour balance of the printed work; ink reduction levels are set by the operator using RasterLink7 software, and do not require specialised knowledge or equipment for colour adjustment.

A new function included in the printer pulls back the printed substrate to enable up to three-layer printing, extending application scope and allowing colour-white-colour or white-colour-clear printing, giving more flexibility in the range of applications, for increased creative effect or to add value to applications such as window graphics.

The two new printers are compatible with Pict, Mimaki’s new cloud-based printer status monitoring tool for all Mimaki products. Available for customers to download, Pict improves the efficiency of Mimaki customers’ print operations and production management by giving them the ability to monitor the operational status and performance of their printers from a PC or mobile device.

Mimaki Europe is upgrading its presence in the direct-to-film (DtF) market, with a new printer that triples the print speed of its previous model.

Mimaki entered the DtF market earlier this year with the launch of TxF150-75, which was designed to offer customers a stable, efficient platform that incorporates Mimaki’s ‘renowned’ quality standards. In line with the original machine, the new TxF300-75 meets these objectives, it is claimed, whilst catering to a diverse set of printing demands, including larger companies requiring higher volumes of high-quality output. As such, TxF300-75 has been designed to incorporate the stability and functionality of TxF150-75, while delivering new levels of productivity with print speeds that are three times higher.

In line with Mimaki’s sustainability goals, TxF300-75 utilises Mimaki’s PHT50 pigment inks that are Eco-Passport certified, so validating their lower environmental impact and meeting the requirements for OEKO-Tex certification.

Mimaki DtF printers feature a built-in ink circulation system that prevents white ink clogging and a degassed ink pack to reduce the risk of poor ink jetting. TxF printers also include core Mimaki features, including NCU (nozzle check unit) and NRS (nozzle recovery system) for stable, uninterrupted print production. The DtF process also enables customers to print on a wider range of fabric such as cotton, mixed fabric, polyester and dark coloured fabrics.

Arjen Evertse, general sales manager at Mimaki Europe, said, ‘We believe in giving customers choice and anticipating their needs, which is why we are expanding our DTF printer line-up hot on the heels of the inaugural system.

‘TxF300-75 has been designed to offer even greater productivity. The innovative 80cm width introduced with our first DtF printer remains a feature of this new system, enabling customers to print more efficiently.’

Mimaki DtF printers are distributed in the UK and Ireland by Hybrid Services. The company’s sales director Andrew Gregory commented, ‘Since its launch, TxF150-75 has been an overwhelming success, receiving a very positive response from the market. It’s exciting to be able to announce the higher production machine joining the range, and we look forward to seeing it later in the year.’

The new TxF300-75 will be commercially available in the UK and Ireland in the fourth quarter of 2023.

Representatives of the Graphics & Print Media Alliance (GPMA) met with the Home Office on 10 March to discuss the new regulations relating to gamma butyrolactone (GBL) and 1,4-butanediol (BDO), which could potentially affect users of solvent and other ink types, requiring expensive licensing for both suppliers and end-users.

The meeting was described as ‘constructive and helpful’ and the GPMA anticipates that there will be a resolution that is both logical and workable for the graphic arts industry.

The meeting included representatives of the British Printing Industries Federation, the British Coatings Federation, the Independent Print Industries Association and the Printing Industry Confederation as well as two suppliers, Epson and Hybrid Services. It also included two officials from the Home Office and one from the Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy (BEIS).

Charles Jarrold, GPMA Chair, said, ‘We understand and support the Government’s intent to legislate to prevent the misuse of GBL and BDO but we needed to find a fair, sensible and workable way to do that without being detrimental to the printing industry and other sectors. We appreciate the support we have had from BEIS and from the Home Office, who listened to our feedback and have indicated that they intend to respond in such a way that the graphic arts sector can continue to operate effectively moving forward.’

Phil McMullin, head of sales Commercial & Industrial Printing,  noted, ‘Epson has worked in collaboration with GPMA on this matter and is pleased with the progress that has been made so far. The GPMA has lobbied rapidly, with conviction and unity to raise awareness of the unintentional but potential damage the current legislation could bring to the UK print industry. Government recognition of the need to protect our industry, and our customers from the proposed legislation is greatly welcomed and will allow UK print businesses to focus on rebuilding after the pandemic. We will continue to work with them closely to resolve this matter.’

Brett Newman, managing director at UK and Ireland Mimaki distributor Hybrid Services said, ‘Given the positive direction in which the discussions are heading, I now believe that there is light at the end of the tunnel. Hybrid Services will continue to work alongside other industry suppliers and the GPMA to jointly lobby the government to protect the industry and ensure that there will be minimal impact on businesses within the print and graphic art industries.’

Industry responses from manufacturers are listed and updated here as Digital Printer receives them.

Mimaki has used its Global Innovation Days event to unveil the 330 Series of wide-format inkjet printers and a new range of CG-AR cutting plotters. All the new machines will be available in the UK and Ireland via Hybrid Services.

The printers, developed for signage, graphics and textile printers, build on the foundations laid by the company’s 100 and 300 Plus Series and have been designed to fit in with Mimaki’s strategy of providing a ‘high-end yet cost effective printing solution across several sectors.’

The company says that the three printers in the series, the JV330-160, CJV330-160 and TS330-1600, have been developed to offer mid- to high-end printing models, focusing on high image quality and productivity. It added that they also align with its objective of growing both its high-end and entry-level product range, encouraging and supporting customers to expand and develop their own offerings.

The JV330-160 and CJV330-160 are 1.6m eco-solvent inkjet printers aimed at the signage and graphics market. Mimaki says they are intended to deliver ‘the high-standard of colour required for indoor and outdoor sign graphics’ using the new ‘Deep Colour Natural’ input profile, thereby offering ‘eye-catching and vivid solid colours, natural skin tones as well as deep reds and neutral greys.’

Both models feature a newly designed unwinding system that allows three rolls of media to be loaded simultaneously, one operator can then bring the desired media into position simply by turning the media changer. Another standard feature on both models is an ‘XY slitter’ that provides in-line X-axis and Y-axis sheet-fed cutting.

The TS330-1600 is a dye sublimation transfer inkjet printer developed for the textile industry. It offers printing speeds of up to 69sqm/hr in highest quality mode, rising to 135sqm/hr at its fastest setting, and its optional add-ons include a 10kg ink tank supply unit and a mini jumbo roll unit that can also be added to load large rolls of transfer paper. An improved take-up system featuring dual motors equipped on both sides of the printer distributes the load and increases the winding power, allowing stable winding of printed paper even for long runs. TxLink4, Mimaki’s RIP software for the textile market is included.

All products in the series are fitted with Mimaki Weaving Dot Technology (MWDT),  meaning that ink drop placement can be altered depending on the printing conditions. ‘Mimaki Remote Access’ (MRA) is also available across the series, allowing users to remotely access the machine and check the printer’s status.

Arjen Evertse, Mimaki’s general manager sales for the EMEA region, commented on the new technology. ‘Following the positive reception of the 100 Series among our customer base, we saw, from sign graphics to textiles, that there is a significant market demand for more cost-effective, mid- to high-end technologies. This is the drive behind our newest cross-platform technology, the 330 Series. Adhering to our strategy of enhancing production efficiencies and streamlining workflows, the new capabilities of this series cater to customers across various sectors, who are looking to improve on quality and delivery time. We look forward to demonstrating these products to customers and prospects alike at Fespa 2022 in Berlin.’

The CG-AR Series cutting plotter series is available in three different sizes (CG-60AR, CG-100AR and CG-130AR), with Mimaki saying they go ‘above and beyond currently available entry-level options.’ With customers demanding shorter delivery times, the new models have been developed to offer increased speed and accuracy, all with user-friendly operability. In addition, the cutters have the ability to handle a diverse range of materials, such as PVC, fluorescent and reflective sheets.

Erskine Stewart, general manager of SwissQprint UK, commented, ‘We are going to highlight the scope that the new fluorescent colours open up.’ He explained that, using just two inks, four striking colour variants are possible – yellow, pink, green and orange – as well as ‘countless possibilities.’

The Magic Touch will be using the event to highlight ‘the growing number of new and unique applications’ made possible by their various image transfer solutions. The company has recently introduced its Direct-to-Film (DtF) digital transfer process which it believes is ‘set to have a major impact on the decoration industry both in the short and long term.’
This new technology is available via several different printer models that offer production capabilities of up to 15sqm/hr. The transfers can be applied to almost any garment, of any colour, on almost any material or fabric composition. The DtF transfers are durable, stretchable and claimed to be very cost-effective.

Mimaki has added four new products to its direct-to-object (DtO) printer line: a significantly faster version of the existing UJF-7151, which can accommodate objects up to 30kg in weight, and three models in a new UJF-MkII ‘e’ small format series.

The printers are said by UK distributor Hybrid Services, who will ship them in 2022, to deliver ‘significant quality and performance benefits’ that should allow users to offer new applications and increase productivity.

The UJF-7151 plusII has eight printheads, allowing dual CMYK printing at 190% of the speed of the previous model. It also adds new halftoning for sharper edges and finer lines as well as smoother colour reproduction. A six-colour version that adds light cyan and magenta further improves image reproduction, supported by 1800dpi image resolution. A Colour Gloss capability adds a glossy finish to the hardened colour inks for texture and detail treatments without needing a clear vanish channel. Its increased load capacity allows thick or heavy media such as wood, metal and glass in addition to more standard print substrates.

For smaller lighter objects, the UJF-MkII e series comprises the 3042MkII e and Ex e models, which offer a print area of 300 x 420mm, and the 6042MkII e, which goes up to 610 x 420mm. All three also use new image processing technology plus an improved gap sensor to avoid printhead collisions, even with transparent media, and will print to a wide range of hard and soft media.

All of the new printers support Mimaki Device Language commands for automation purposes and are driven by RasterLink 7 Rip software. The UV inks used are all Greenguard Gold certified.

‘These new models deliver the cutting-edge technology required by businesses to grow and diversify their product offering, as well as creating opportunities for companies to both explore and expand into new market sectors,’ commented Hybrid’s head of Marketing & Business Development, Duncan Jefferies.
